And The Day’s Half-Ovuh

The DePatie-Freleng cartoons were definitely a sacred staple of my childhood. I had this entire series of DVDs that they released when I was growing up, which consisted of several volumes of Pink Panther stuff, a volume collecting Inspector Clouseau’s stuff, and a volume collecting The And and The Aardvark’s stuff. I watched them religiously and even had a big book full of info about them (which I still have to this day!).

Recently, I found all those old DVDs at my Dad’s house, and coincidentally discovered that the rest of DePatie-Freleng’s output (stuff like Misterjaw and The Blue Racer) was recently, finally released on DVD. So I’ve been revisiting the stuff, and… it rules!

Decided to take a stab at drawing the aforementioned Ant and Aardvark. Surprisingly enough considering how much I’ve always loved these cartoons, as far as I can tell this is the first time I’ve ever tried drawing these specific characters. I think it shows in that they’re stiffer than I woulda liked them to be, and I made Ant’s arms and legs too thick. They’re pretty much sticks in the actual shorts. I expect I’ll be trying to get that right soon.

UPDATE: I tried! Think this turned out better:

Happy 77th Birthday, Frank Oz!

Time to celebrate one of our top living legends! A multi-talent who’s beyond talented at each talent, none other than Mr. Frank Oz! (Kermit introducing celebrity guest star voice) Yaaaayyy!!!!

I wouldn’t like to be that famous, I value my privacy. Mind you, Miss Piggy enjoys every moment of it. If it were not for me, she would spend all her time in the limelight.”

Let’s Go To The Hop

Second quick-ish drawing for the day, this time of Hoppity Hooper, one of Jay Ward’s lesser-known characters these days. There’s been no official DVD release, but some cartoons of his have popped up on various compilations and bootlegged (I think? The Hoppity releases I’ve seen that weren’t just on compilation packages appear to be not officially-sanctioned, and just taped off of a TV airing) things throughout the years. Seems as though most of them have been uploaded to YouTube.

Anyways! What a great design that frog man had!!

Early Morning Huck

Had trouble sleeping last night, so I decided to just cut my losses and wake up for the day earlier than normal. With me being ready for work before I usually am, I decided to use some of that spare time to knock out a quick Huck doodle. That’s not a euphemism for anything, as evidenced by the drawing above.

The Daff

I’m not sure which version of Daffy I like best. You know the old argument, Clampett or Jones? I alternate between them. But lately, whenever I’ve doodled Daffy it was more Clampett-inspired, so I went back to Jones-inspired for this thing right here.

Happy 70th Birthday, Joey Ramone!

Today would have been the 70th birthday of rock ‘n roll trailblazer Jeffrey Hyman, AKA Joey Ramone.

Few bands mean more to me than the Ramones do. I got into the Ramones at that perfect teenage age where one is meant to do that sort of thing, and it shaped me in the best possible way. Joey in particular has a special place in my heart, I’ve always been able to relate to him in a lot of ways. He and his work just connected with me in some immediate and profound way, what can I say!!

Have a good one in Punk Heaven, Joey.
